Experience
RSE has provided planning, design and construction services to major rail transit agencies. The representative projects completed within the last five years and in progress are described below.
Caltrain Santa Clara to San Jose Diridon Corridor Track and Station Improvements
RSE provided overall planning, final design, and construction support services for this 6-mile high capacity freight and commuter rail corridor. Under this project, alternative track alignments and station designs were studied and documented in a Project Study Report to improve this corridor in multiple phases. RSE subsequently provided final design and construction support services for the improvements of two major stations, Santa Clara and San Jose Diridon (Caltrain South Terminal) and corridor wide track/signal upgrade.

GIS and Mapping
As a leader in railroad surveying,
data management, and engineering services, RSE is in a unique position of
providing their clients with a wide range of services. RSE has
implemented a Geographic Information System (GIS) methodology for spatial
data storage, processing, and visualization using a variety of leading
software programs such as ArcGIS 9.2, Google Earth, MicroStation, AutoCad,
and StarPlus StarNet. While ArcGIS is the best GIS platform, it requires
significant training to be proficient. Therefore, RSE has
developed user friendly solutions using Google Earth and Google maps that
allow everyone to quickly visualize and analyze each feature in their spatial database.
The railroad surveyor is utilized in the development of the Railroad
GIS because of the specialized knowledge of the data being acquired, i.e.
turnout components, signal type, rail weight and type, joint and weld
details, etc. Surveying knowledge is essential in building a
complete GIS attribute table, and to fully document each item in the
metadata with such things as accuracy, precision, date, and all
information considered necessary.
